weekend schmooze 002
Overall, I spent this week working and doing errands like buying the last Christmas gifts. I also had two Secret Santa dinners which drained my social battery. And I'm already feeling antsy regarding New Year's Eve. I don't enjoy about partying at New Year's Eve and, to add to that, I don't feel any urge to drink alcohol and I get sleepy at 11 pm.
All in all, it's the perfect cocktail for me to get cranky and whine about going to my friend's place, but we'll see how I feel at the time.
Tomorrow (Sunday) I leave for my hometown to spend the holidays. While I'm lucky enough to have a good relationship with my parents, I don't like to stay there for many days in a row, so I might come back home on the 25th or 26th. I just enjoy being on my own home too much!
Now, time for the weekly recap!
📚 Reading
Kept on going through my backlog of articles now saved in Wallabag. While I'm still adding articles, I'm now down to 133, even though I keep on adding more articles as a way to filter through all the newsletters and interesting posts. The big highlight of the week was Can a mass shooter demand a good death?. I won't spoil it for you, but I read it four days ago and I'm still thinking about this case.
I didn't read História do Novo Nome this week, but I'm sure I'll be doing a lot of reading through the next few days.
🎧 Listening
- Since I was running around all week, I didn't listen to a lot of music. Still, here's an interesting bunch of songs.
📺 Watching
Now watching Season 2 of Midnight Diner. While I love the stories and characters, the main thing for me is the ambiance of the show. And all the cooking, which has been a huge inspiration. Simple, good ingredients done right always trump over-complicated stuff, specially for home cooks.
Caught up with some of my backlog on Freetube while setting up Football Manager on my laptop for the holidays.
🚲 Wandrering
- Took one "big" ride this week where I did a lot of cycling up and down the same neighborhood. Discovered a new bookshop and some shortcuts I can use during rush hour traffic, which is always nice.
🔗 Linkipedia
Mire is a wonderful web-based, minimalist RSS reader created by Meadow. I use it as a backup/mobile alternative to Vivaldi Reader. It also allows users to easily share their blogroll.
James has also come up with Artemis, a "calm web reader" that I've also been trying. It basically generates a daily newspaper curated by you, for you, and without any notifications.
Discovered Brevity from a Andout's blog post. I'll be honest, ever since COVID and the beginning of the invasion in Ukraine, I stopped checking the news so often. Still, this looks like a great tool for those who want to be kept in the loop, but would rather do it without anxiety-filled headlines.
Ever wondered how bicycles work? Wait no more! Here's a wonderful interactive guide where you can waste the rest of your weekend in awe. However, I keep seeing cycling as:
- Pedal.
- Steer.
- ????
- Enjoy.
Routheshuffle is a random route generator for running, walking and cycling. Looks like a great tool to find some inspiration for my bike rides.
"Finland first in world to ban cargo ships from dumping wastewater". I had never thought about this issue. It's freaking 2024! How is this a thing?
"living a complex life" by Ava. Overall a great post, but this was the big highlight for me, and I wholeheartedly agree:
"I think at some point you realize that endless optimization and productivity will not save you and at times gives a false sense of security. Your intricate routines do not make way for when your body or mental give out, or when your loved ones die, and the rest of your pride goes down the drain with them."
